Why I Created My Cancer Pet
In January of 2011, I noticed that my five-year old Boxer named Bull started losing weight, wasn’t eating and experienced a drop in energy. I took him to his Veterinarian who suggested that I take Bull to an Oncology Specialist. Three days later, I took him to UC Davis and it was confirmed that Bull had T-cell Lymphoma. I was given a choice that had to be made immediately – let the disease progress and Bull would die within a few weeks or choose chemotherapy and he might live another 6 to 12 months. With my head spinning, I chose chemotherapy.
There are many forms of pet cancers and most develop very fast and without warning. As most people do in this age of technology, I turned to the internet to learn as much as I could. I looked for information on causes. I searched for diet and nutrition information. I searched for articles and books. I looked for other people who could share their stories and some advice.
While I did find some useful resources, a great deal of my search was fruitless and frustrating. So I created My Cancer Pet to be the ONE place where people could come to share their stories, gain appropriate knowledge, lend support to others and pull together to fight this disease.
It is my goal to build a vibrant, caring community where people experiencing the challenges of a pet with cancer, experts in the field and others get fully involved. You are not alone in this battle. Tell your story. Lean on the community. Let My Cancer Pet be the place where you gain strength.
I encourage you to Join our community and ask that you please Invite your friends to do so as well. There is strength in numbers and each one of us can make a difference in the lives of others.
I only wish I had the support of the My Cancer Pet community back in January. Bull endured chemotherapy and fought cancer for 7 months. He died in September 2011 at a very young age. I dedicate this site to his memory.
